Do defaults go off and back on again?

Iv been keeping an eye on my credit report for a few months as now in stable employment and want a mortgage in the future

Anyway I had a default with Halifax for £2000 from around 2011, iv just checked and it's no longer there?

Any reasons why???

I have one that disappeared a while ago, I suspect it's been sold on. Not reappeared yet.

I've had a few go and come back with a new company.
