Getting to Sheffield Uni via public transport

Hi, Hope someone can help me.
My 14yo is on a programme at University of Sheffield via a scheme his school participates in. Until now we have been able to drive him there an back, but due to a variety of other commitments he needs to learn how to get there and back under his own steam.
There is a train from the village we live in that will take him to Sheffield, but what's the best way after that? It has also been suggested to me that he gets off at Meadowhall instead and catches the tram. Looking this up I see there are 2 tram routes that go from Meadowhall but only one goes straight through to the Uni without requiring a change. At the risk of sounding idiotic how do you know which route tram you are catching?
Thanks

Personally I'd walk from the station as it's about 15-20 mins to the uni which really isn't bad, depending on which bit of it you're going to. By the time you've waited for tram etc... I'd make sure he has a basic map or sat nav (14 year olds these days, you never know) on his phone if that's the way he's going though.
Tram wise you can get the tram from the station; not sure what the benefit of going from Meadowhell is, I wouldn't know as I never did it. You know which one to get from the destination on the front of the tram, so if you're going to the university from there it you'd need the one that said Middlewood on the front. If you're going from the station to the University you'd need the Malin Bridge one. They're friendly folk round there so he could ask if he gets stuck.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -
Thanks for the replies. I was aware the Uni is a walkable distance as my Grandparents used to live close by, but he's a teen that's only ever caught a bus from our village to the terminating stop in our town centre. We don't live in Sheffield and I think as a starting point it would be better to get public transport at least to start off with.
Where are the tram stops if he gets off at either Meadowhall or Sheffield train station? That's why I wondered if Meadowhall would be easier if the tram stop is closer by.0 -
Have a look at route options on here http://traveline.info/ It's very easy to use and takes you from door to door. Depending where you live, there may be a better way to get there that you're not aware of.

The tram stop from Sheffield station is dead easy, you just go up the stairs from the platform and there are signs (its the opposite direction from the exit on the walkway), it's literally next to the station; in the station really. Couldn't be easier. I think it's similar from Meadowhell to be fair, trains and trams in the same place. I used to drive though, so I'm not 100%.
I lived in Sheffield for 6 years, 3 years at the uni. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about getting to specific placesor the University or Sheffield in general.
