Claim as unable to fly

Was flying to Turkey with EJ in September with my Mother but she has broken her knee and can now not travel. We both are insured with Insuretogo separately mine is an annual one taken out in June and hers is just a single one due to start on 15th September.
Would I be able to (and is it best) claim on mine (I paid for flights) as she is my companion although I am still going or can she claim on hers even though not kicked in yet.

Hope someone can advise which is best.

Thanks YL

Her single trip insurance is valid since she has to cancel the holiday for which she took out insurance.

You are not planning to cancel and so do not have any basis for a claim against your insurance.

I hope that she makes a good recovery and enjoys many more holidays in due course, and that you have a good time even without her.

Thanks Voyager was hoping that was the case.
This was her 80th birthday trip but instead will be in plaster for about 6 weeks but she is in quite good spirits :)

please clarify if her insurance cover start date was the day she took it out, or the first day of the holiday. If the latter then she cannot claim.

If it's single trip travel insurance then there is no 'start date' like you would get on an annual policy. You are generally covered for the dates which you intend to travel, but cancellation cover if included, is valid from the day that you purchased the insurance.

As she is travelling with you and is now unable to go, you should be able to claim off your travel insurance for cancellation too. We had a holiday booked for Greece earlier in the year and my daughter fell ill before we went and needed surgery and was deemed unfit to travel by her doctor. We claimed for the holiday (she is 7 so covered on our policy) as did my parents, in-laws and my Nan too who all had insurance with separate companies as we were all due to travel together.

Thanks Lea and mgdavid. Yes cancellation is included but insurance cover is from date of flying. Lea am wondering though as I am still going that our situations are different.

BTW as no refund from EJ do I have to actually cancel with them

It doesn't matter that insurance is from the day of flying. She will be covered for cancellation from the day she bought her travel insurance so she will still be able to claim back. Yes you will need to cancel with EJ as you will need a cancellation letter from them to send to the insurance company, you will also need a copy of the booking for your hotel / apartment and transfers they will re-imburse half of the cost minus any excess fee. She must claim on her insurance as your insurance is for you only and will not cover companions etc.

The only issue you may have is that the accommodation part of things won't be cancelled as you will still be going, but as it has already been paid for I see no reason why they shouldn't refund her half if it's explained properly..

You won't get half the cost of the accommodation. The accommodation provider will work out how much it is for a single person still going, deduct that from the total paid and pay the difference while will be less than half.
  • Thanks again Lea and Wammer. Luckily acomodations are not pre paid so one less thing to worry about. Right will cancel ej flight :)

Hold fire on this: ask her insurers what to do. They will probably ask for confirmation from EJ, but my fear is that if you just cancel then the EJ record might be archived so then they would be unable to give the confirmation.

General rule: contact the insurer ASAP and do what they say. Doing more or less anything without them telling you to do so may invalidate the claim.
