Settled Default - HELP!!

Hi all,
I recently applied for a credit report off equifax and to my horror found that BT had applied a default against me from 2009. I rang BT and they had no records of me ever having an account. I ended up dealing with the executive complaints team after emailing the CEO in despair. He confirmed that there was a balance of £58 outstanding which I immediately paid. However they are now in the process of marking the default as settled. I want them to remove it completely as I feel it is unfair that I was never informed. Upon leaving the property in question I let all suppliers know my forwarding address and my mobile number remained unchanged. Apparently the account was closed due to late payment of this £58, not because I closed it. They have said that the system automatically rings the landline number when contacting customers, so I asked why did they not ring my mobile, he said that he does not know as there are no notes on the account due to the age. He is sending me a deadlock letter now. My question is where do I go from here? From reading the forum I see that it will disappear off my account next year but I want it gone now as it shouldn't be there

Complain. Tell them you intend to go to the ombudsman and Information Commissioner if it is not removed.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

I said that to them and they said there was nothing more he could do and would raise a deadlock letter. If they have no notes on the account how do they have proof they have informed me of a default? Equifax are useless and state they can only change something if informed by the issuing company. Am I going to have to go through the ombudsman route then?0

Annoying thing is I never miss payments and manage my accounts really well. I would 100% have informed them of my new address. Equifax has a red warning saying 63 months since last payment issue which is this BT default.0

Once you have the deadlock letter go the the ombudsman and ICO.

Thank you I'll save those links. So annoying when it's something that you've never been informed about and the company can't tell you the reasons behind it. Strange thing is it's never really affected my credit applications. I have a car on finance and 2 excellent deal credit cards as well as a few 0% finance purchases. I just don't like the thought of it being there0
