Shellas wheels sold my details, so angry

Hello
Is there anything I can do about this as im so annoyed.
I had an accident 2 years ago ( other driver hit me while on his phone while I was stopped at a red light)
The other drive paid me compensation for my injurys and all was sorted, however Shellas Wheels then upped my insurance by £300, ( on a no fault accident) so I cancelled my policy and got my insurance elsewhere for the normal price,
However since then I have been bombarded with companies saying that my details have been passed onto them by my insurance company offering me the chance to claim against this other driver.
I am now receiving between 7 to 15 calls a day on both my mobile and my home number trying to get me to claim for the accident.
how do I stop these calls they are driving me potty.
PLEASE HELP :D

PS I should point out that I also ticked the DO NOT SHARE MY DETAILS Box

Just answer and say you are not that person and have never been in a car accident.

They'll remove you from the list and eventually the calls will stop.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Hi Pinkshoes,

Thank you for the reply, I did that for the 1st year when it was only 1 or 2 calls, but in the last 2 months its gotten steadily worse.
Ive no idea how you unregister your details because it really is driving me potty

    xxx

Did you go to A&E after the accident?

We've found that we get these sort of calls starting about a week after a visit. It's either someone in the NHS selling the details on or they have someone sat near to the reception desk so that they can note down your details as you give them to the receptionist. My Dad had these calls as well after a trip to A&E at a totally different hospital.
  • Hi LilElvis

I never went to A&E , I did go to my GP just for a check over as I had minimal damage to me.

Ive spoken to a few of these people that have called and explained this has already been settled so there is no need for them to keep calling me but they have all said the same thing your insurance company passed your details on as a person who might be interested in suing the other person?

Ask them for details of which accident they are talking about. It's likely they are speculative. My OH's last accident was over 15 years ago - and so way outside the statute of limitations - but he will get calls 'referred from his insurer' about a recent accident that are just hoping to catch the right person.

It seems once your name and number make it on to one of these lists, it's there forever.

You are only eligible to claim for injury for 3 years after the incident.

The calls will stop then if they are as a result of someone passing on your details. (eg police/ambulance/garage/tow truck/insurance clerk/hospital staff etc)

But if they are simply cold calls fishing, then they can be expected to carry on!
  • It could even be the other driver's insurance company who sold your details on. I think this practise is illegal now (not 100% sure though).
  • More likely it's connected with wherever you bought your new insurance from. I take it you got a few quotes, perhaps used a comparison site or two, or a broker? In each case, they ask for details of any claims, accidents or convictions you may have. What happens to the information once you move on? I don't know. But I've had the phone start ringing literally within minutes.

I got wise after the second year and put a discontinued phone number in the quotation forms. Oddly, the spurious calls pretty-much dried up.
