Company has done dodgy insulation work

Hi guys,

This is my first post, so pls accept my apologies if i do or say anything incorrectly.

I've recently had cavity wall insulation carried out by a company whom are registered with CIGA and BBA. I had a lot of problems with the company such as missing out big areas of the walls being missed out and some damage done whilst carrying out their works, but eventually they rectified the issues...or at least I thought so :(

I have had an inspection done by BBA, whom have said that not only is my property not suitable for the insulation as it's random stone meaning the pumped stuff has to come back out, but also that they haven't carried out the proper gas safety checks too, putting my family's life at risk.

They said for this reason there is no warranty and therefore the company is obliged to fix the problems and compensate as required. I told the inspector that after having so many problems with them, I have lost total trust to have this company around again. He also added that there are a lot of companies going around pumping this stuff into old properties without bothering to do the full checks in order to make a quick buck, but eventually it causes more problems with damp patches etc.

The next day, I got a call from the company...no apologies...in fact he seemed more upset as to why I had raised a complaint against them and said that they had been contacted by BBA and that they needed to come and take out the stuff. As you can imagine, I was very upset

So in the heat of the moment I told him that don't want him to call me and don't even think about coming down as I don't trust them. Any correspondence I would like to be done in writing.

I now don't know what to do....I'm going to be honest and say that not only do I want an external contractor to get rid of the stuff and repair the necessary damage, but I also want to be compensated too.

I would be ever so grateful if you could give me your opinion as to what you think? What approach shall I use? What are my rights? etc

I wouldn't have thought you have any right to prevent them from doing the remedial work and demand they pay for a contractor!

Thanks for your reply andy. So if a company bodged up a job not once but on numerous occasions, you would let them come back and try to do so called remedial work again? How can you trust that they will do it correctly if all this time they've messed up?

It's like someone deliberately crashing into your car and then telling you that you don't have a right to choose where to get the car repaired from as they can only do it.

Surely you understand my frustration, don't you?

I do understand your frustration, but that doesn't change the fact that the company were willing to remedy the work under the instruction of BBA and you have stopped them. It's highly unlikely they will bodge the remedial works knowing their certifications are at risk as the work is being checked. Presumably BBA will want to inspect again once remedied.

Fair enough Andy, but the job is not as simply as such some stuff back out...they actually have to knock out stones from the property too.

Also it still leaves the fact that they carried out unsafe gas checks, hence I think it's only fair to say that I would like to be compensated for this.

If you are looking for compensation you can write to the company and ask for x amount .
They may say no or may negotiate .
Or use the services of a solicitor / or any one of the claims advisor's advertised .
  • Thank you JJ. I have written to them and explaining what things have gone wrong, asking for some form of compensation and remedial action.
