BETA breed specific dog food - anyone feeding that?

Just had a notification that we are getting a 12kg bag to test and review.

Is anyone feeding this brand to their dog?

  • I have done in the past but won't ever again. I gave one of mine Beta Adult Maintainance and it gave him terrible wind and the runs, so I wouldn't be in a big hurry to give him any Beta food again. I then looked at a website called Allaboutdogfood and discovered Beta was mostly rubbish anyway. Saying that, what one dog thrives on another doesn't. It's a matter of choice for the owner and the dog.

  • Maisie arrived on it - her tum was terrible

Its got maize and wheat etc in and I'd personally never feed again

If I won a bag id give to my local rescue as just not worth upsetting her tum again!

Don't know about the breed specific ones, but would assume it's fairly low quality like the rest.

You could always donate it to a rescue though
  • Mine arrived today--thanks to your previous post---included were 20 leaflets each with a £3.00 voucher for 2kg.or above bag. We're supposed to hand these around.
Got the German Shepherd specific variety.
Will give it a try--my eldest seemed more interested in the big cardboard box that the bag came in.

Ripple's breeder started her litter on it but as someone else mentioned, it gave them the runs so she changed

Thanks for replies - I have seen normal BETA reviews and was not impressed at all. Do not know if the "breed specific" is any better.

It has no arrived yet so can not see the ingredients as on the bag.

boingsaidzebedee - long time no see :)

krlyr - there is a homeless guy with a dog that I see every day after work as he sits outside the station, I normally get the dog some treats from a Sainsbury nearby and give the man some money too, I maye take the food for him. He could not possibly drag a 12kg bag around with him but I can take it for him im smaller packets.

Really not sure I want to risk upsetting Zara's stomach as it seems to contain chicken in some form which I did not realise when I applied for the trial.

Maybe the poorly tums were just the sudden change of food. I always mix a little old with the first bit of new if I have to change brands, and that seems to help.

That is a given, always mix old with new when changing food.

Zara seems to have some intolerance to chicken based food.

And I already have a dilemma do I move her to senior or not - she is on Orijen Fish and thinking of moving her to Orijen Senior but that contains chicken so ...

Will probably stay on Orijen Fish anyway as there is simply no comparison between Orijen and Beta.

BUT the beg will go to very good use...

I don't think so, it took me over two weeks to introduce the Beta, so I can't say I changed him over quickly. It just didn't suit him. I won't buy it ever again.

Beta breed specific - Retriever composition...
Cereals, Meat and animal derivatives (8%*) , Vegetable protein extracts, Oils and fats, Derivatives of vegetable origin, Vegetables (dried chicory root 1.0%), Minerals.

Looking at the amount of cereal & Veg content, it's closer to Rabbit food than dog food. Only 8% "meat"!!

It's not particularly cheap either @ £32 for 12kg.... Wainrights grain free is only slightly dearer @ £35 for 10kg & it's much better quality.
Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!
