Hi , I've tried to grow garlic for last two years with only limited success very small bulbs , and the cost of garlic bulbs appears expensive this year .
When I was a local supermarket the other day they had dome really bigbulbs- almost as big as elephant garlic and they were 60p so I got 2 one to cook with but I'm tempted to plant the other soon as an experiment .
Anyone had any success?

The main dangers in planting supermarket garlic is that it might be a variety best suited to warmer climes, or that it is infected with nematodes, or viruses.
Diseases and nematodes are much less likely than unsuitability, but if you import either, that's your onion and garlic growing over for a few years.
The best way to get good garlic is to plant early and overwinter it. As you are 'Oop norf,' you need a hardy, probably hard-necked variety, not the supermarket softies from France, Spain or China.

I get poor results from all garlic planted and have SM and the best the nursery has to offer.
Threatening elephant garlic at present, if anyone has a few to spare:o:o
I do agree with DS however, most advise planting in spring, that hasn't worked for me, overwintering seems better.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
I used garlic bulbs from Poundland - reasonable success but would have been better in a different position in my garden. The ones I bought from the Isle of Wight just disappeared!! I've also had success with Poundland onion sets & seed potatoes.Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

I planted some 99p store potatoes this year. They are great. Nice decent crop a good size.
They chip and mash really well. But i have lost the label...
What are they? Fairly pale and a decent size? Got some in the garden also. If i remember i will take a picture.
But garlic this year was small. Onions were eaten by something?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
