There is a danger of this thread focussing on the effectiveness of carbon offsetting, which wasn’t the point of the programme.

Their concern, and that of the New Scientist article, was un-regulated firms cashing in on the ‘green hysteria’ by taking money for offsetting and merely using some of this money to make a donation to already existing environmentally friendly schemes.

So if anyone wants to salve their conscience, they can send me money and I will give some of it(not much though) to someone I know who bought a Windsave turbine from B&Q and a solar panel system from Simplee Solar!

On that subject you might enjoy this site:

Which has similar views on the subject ....

PS. Many people in America thought this site was real
That website has about as much credibility as some of the carbon offsetting sites.

I joined but won’t say which category!

I just don't buy into this Man Made Global Warming lark.

I have not so far been convinced, or shown any clear hard and fast evidence. And IMO there's more people questioning the science of Man made Global Warming than ever before.

Take this summer, its almost August it been wet and somewhat mild.

Last year we had it hot for weeks on end.

This is what bugs me, last year it was global warming, this year because its not hot, the excuse is 'oh its climate change'.

I look at it like this, The planet has had life on it for millions of years. Modern humans has been been here, for what is a blink of an eye. The worlds climate has constantly changed and evolved since day 1 and will do for million more years. Rain forests have come and gone, seas and oceans have shifted as have the deserts.

All we have to do, not worry about whether our carbon footprint is a size 10 or a size 5, or whether Mr Smith drives a tank or a car or rides a bike. All we have to do is keep the world relatively clean and tidy for the next generation. Thats it, easy, just clear up are own s**t we make. And the world will look after its self.

I am 100% sure the world will survive, but whether WE do is another matter. (By WE I mean humanity as we know it)

Global warming and climate change are to all intents and purposes the same thing.

Most scientists do agree it's man made.

The fact that it's wet this summer actually supports global warming, as a warmer planet can keep more moisture in the air and actually will give rise to higher precipitation.

There's plenty of scientists who don't agree, and no they're not bought off by oil companies either. and all this malarky about it being too wet or too hot, or too dry imo its all just natural changes.
Man made Global warming its just a theory at the end of the day. Not a proven fact beyond reasonable doubt. If it was you'd have 100% scientific agreement, but we don't.

In a year or two people will be being scared witless about something else, global cooling, or global dimming or a new cold war with Russia

Many scientific theories are not proven beyond reasonable doubt, but the crucial point is that it's the scientific concensus that man is causing climate change.

    Only by the scientists agree.

I could say there is consensus between scientists who don't agree with made made global warming which there is, and equally crucial to skeptical camp.

No, that's not what it means: concensus means that there is general agreement amongst the majority of scientists across the board.

Very few scientists fundamentally disagree that there is no man-made effect; part of the problem is that scientists aren't always good at communicating with non-scientists (and of course there's a basic problem that the man in the street simply doesn't understand the science behind all this).

My take on it is that the planet is due for a change of climate. There is an ice age every 100000 years (or something) and leading up to that there is an increase in temperature. I think man and particularly the industrial revolution is speeding that process up.
I am sure the world will be OK, man will become extinct, and make way for another age. I still think that we should clean up our mess and be conscious of the effect we have on the planet and do what we can to minimise it.
You can't put the genie back in the bottle, people are not going to give up their cars or go back to a provincial way of life, and with countries, (particularly China, but others will follow) following in our footsteps. I think it is going to be very difficult to even slow the damage we do.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

Rubbish, you've popped 'majority' in to argue a point about Man Made Global Warming which cannot be proved.

The theory is vague, misleading and inaccurate and is laughable
consensus means is a general agreement among the members of a given group or community, each of which exercises some discretion in decision making and follow-up action. ie the one's who agree with man made global warming.

You happen to believe that. I don't, as does plenty of scientists.

I've looked at both sides, I've heard scientists from both sides speak.

Man Made Global Warming IMO is just a con.

Natural Climate Change IMO is the truth.
