Hi All

just moved home in to 3 bed house and I have Baxi System HE A boiler- heat only,
shame it is not combi, but it whould do ?

there is CentaurPlus C21 programmer , and Honeywell Dial Setting Room Thermostat
I feel it needs upgrade ( not the boiler)

My question would be what would be products that could be easily installed

not sure it this system is compatable with smart Nest etc?
or just basic wired or wireless products would do

At my previuos house i had Horstmann HRFS1 Programmable Room Thermostat which I was very happy about as I could move it to any room .

Also
I'm not sure how this new system works, in particular HW ,

thanks

You don't indicate what you are trying to achieve with the new controls. The first thing that I would look at, if you haven't got them already, is TRVs so that you can control the temperatures in each room; i.e., not providing a lot of heat to rooms that are only used occasionally.

A 'system' boiler usually heats the water by passing hot water from the boiler to a coil inside the HW cylinder. Your hot water cylinder may be vented (tank in loft) or unvented (pressurised). For an unvented system, it is likely that you have a 3-way motorised vale: unvented systems normally have 2 motorised valves (one for hot water and the other for heating).

FWiW, I have a Honeywell wireless controller, TRVs and a hot water kit. The latter controls the hot water in my hot water cylinder in the range 50 to 60C. It works by switching the inline valve on/off - on at 50 and off at 60C. This arrangement saves me about 20% in gas usage - but sadly, not in cost because of standing charges.

My advice would be to take advice from a professional. Quotes are usually free or you could post pictures of your system on a plumbing forum. Having nothing more than a wireless thermostat - which you move from room to room - may well achieve greater comfort and convenience but no savings if the whole house is being heated just to give you, say, a warm living room.

The link below is a comparison of the various systems now available to homeowners:

    Thanks
there are basic trv's on each radiator
what I would like to achieve it to have an easy control on my heating and hw,
now I set time on the programer for when when I want hot water, but this varies each day,
Miss my combi boiler ...turn the tap and it will heat hw,

there is a tank in a loft so I believe this system is vented, but still not sure how it works, what do you mean saying: 'A 'system' boiler usually heats the water by passing hot water from the boiler to a coil inside the HW cylinder.'?
I get hot water now but I really see boiler on..

what hot water kit do you have?

    many thanks,

looks like I know very little about 'other systems' apart from combi ...

This might help. Have a look at the graphics:

    http://www.muswell-hill.com/foxandco/pages/boilertypes.htm

Usually, the boiler is controlled by a time switch and a thermostat that you can adjust to control the temperature of the stored water. All the time switch does is turn an inline motorised valve ON/OFF to allow boiler-heated water to pass through the coil.

My HW is programmed to be 'ON' from 0630 until 10am and then 'ON' again from 4.30 to 9pm. This doesn't mean that the water is being heated constantly - it just means that the boiler can heat the water in the cylinder as and when the thermostat detects a drop in water temperature. To maintain a 250 litre tank with about 2/3rds of hot water my boiler fires up for about 30 minutes each day. My gas consumption for hot water and cooking averages 9.4KWh per day. Prior to fitting the HW kit it was about 13KWh per day due, I suspect, to gas loss on boiler firings.

I have modified my system with an Evohome Controller and HW kit. The HW kit has its own cylinder stat which controls the HW to settings that can be adjusted depending on needs. I have mine set to come ON at 50C and OFF at 60C. The controller itself can act as a wireless heating thermostat. The controller is designed to operate with wireless TRVs but it works fine without them. Cost for the controller, wifi access and the HW kit is about £400.

That's a difficult one as all homes are different. My installation was pretty simple. Look at the Honeywell site for a list of approved Evohome installers.

    This might help:
