Question about maternity leave (teacher)

You don't have to go bank in July to get paid over the summer. You just state your return to work is on the first day of the summer holiday.
Look at NASUWT or NUT websites. They both have downloadable leaflets about your terms and conditions which explain them clearly and well.

It's no different from anyone else I'd say. Your leave accrues at a normal rate whilst you are on maternity leave so would they be good enough to fit in all your leave due if you returned AFTER the summer?
If I take my full year off I won't go back until the end of September next year and between then and December they'd have to fit my 33 days in that I'd be entitled to so I'd be off another 6 weeks or so in the remainder of the year.
You're quite right to go back just before the end of term or your first day back being the first day of the holidays, every other teacher probably would (including my sister, she did that and ended up off from the start of July for holidays, had baby in August, and then returned to work the following August when schools went back!No longer ...tobe! Teachers don't accumulate holidays while on maternity leave (unlike in most jobs).0

Teachers dont accrue holidays but there is an option to take additional unpaid leave- certainly a fortnight.
Have a think about what's right for you, baby, finances and pupils. I'm going back shortly and am unsure I was up to doing job properly before baby was 7 months!0 -
Thanks for the replies.
I am not a teacher, I am actually a lecturer in a 6th form college. Used the term teacher as it's still teaching and it's a common profession.
According to our maternity policy we do accrue our holidays over the maternity leave period.Saving goal for BTL mortgage - 28600 / 60000 ( July 2021) , 37600/60000 (December 2021) , 39300 / 60000 (august 2022) , 41000/60000 ( January 2023)0 -
Sixth form colleges have different ts and cs so you should check with union and HR.0

Sorry, but that's just nonsense. Accrual of holidays on maternity leave is enshrined in law. Part of the whole gender equality thing.
Teachers only accrue statutory holidays (maternity leave or not), so that would all get eaten up by one summer off. Teachers don't actually get annual leave as such beyond the statutory minimum - they are "required to be available for 195 days" and however many hours. So in the summer a teacher isn't strictly on annual leave - they just aren't at work.
If you're really interested, it's in the Burgundy Book and STPC. Those quote possibly don't apply to a college lecturer.
edit: The accrual can matter when a teacher leaves, although holiday pay can be offset against OMP repayment.0 -

University lecturers aren't off for the summer holidays. Interesting to see differences between diff education systems.0 -
I did a very similar thing. I was due 23rd Sept last year so I started my maternity leave right at the beginning of the new school year, I did work for 2 training days as I thought I had to work, however my head teacher informed me I could of put down the 1st day of the new year as my start date if I wanted to. So it was extremely nice to be off all of last summer and not have it count as maternity leave and then just work for 2 days before starting maternity leave.
I returned to work for the last 7 week 1/2 term before the current holidays started as my money stopped completely then and was just daft being off over the summer holidays not getting any money where as obviously I've been getting paid since the 5th June.
A colleague of mine returned to work from her leave for the last day of the school year before the summer holidays started.Mummy to two girls: October 2013 and February 20160
