CCP claim through Barclaycard

Back in February I filled out the CPP compensation claim and received a single cheque for about £300 a couple months later, however I had two policies with them and was expecting a second cheque so with the August 30 deadline fast approaching I thought I should call them and enquire why I never received a second cheque, since I was expecting considerably more than the £300.

It turned out that CPP were not offering compensation for the ID theft protection because it was taken out via Barclaycard and then passed on to CPP. When I received the credit card in 2008 the letter said I needed to call them to activate it but then I had the high pressure sales talk to take out the policy and I signed up. Later on when I tried to cancel it via CPP there was a similar high pressure scare tactic used to stop me cancelling it.

Does anybody know where I stand in this situation regarding a claim and getting my money back for the unnecessary ID protection? CPP gave me some details to contact Barclaycard but I wanted to learn some more before approaching them.

I have never received any kind of letter from Barclaycard saying I could be entitled to compensation. Having had this policy first for myself and later also for my wife I'm thinking the total amount must be several hundred pounds over 5 years.

You should realise that this does not indicate that you were definitely mis-sold.

Nor will you. The CPP refund scheme is entirely separate. Any complaint you make will be independent of the scheme.
If you decide to complain then you will need to provide robust complaint reasons.
  • There is something very odd with this CPP ID Protection, which we were also persuaded to take out, not realising our bank covered us for this as well! I was also referred to Barclaycard which was a complete surprise to me. All the documentation is on CPP letter heading for the past 3 years. B'card were difficult but I eventually got a ref. no. from them and am awaiting their written confirmation to initiate a claim. I called CPP Redress back again last Fri 29th Aug and another difficult discussion took place as they said our ID policies were not taken out through CPP?? Their docs re this redress scheme are somewhat ambiguous, and so are their responses to the FAQ online which I pointed out, and have also printed hard copies of in case they disappear offline! They make references to the ID Protection as well as the card protection but then deny on the phone that they sold the two ID policies. I wish MoneySavingExpert and or Savvywoman.com or somebody would get some clarification. I have written a strong letter to the CPP Redress Scheme, and had an ambiguous letter in response to my call on Friday. I will take this to the Ombudsman if there is continued confusion and CPP keep giving out conflicting information. We have put in a claim for the card protection.

Since the CPP Redress Scheme closed on Saturday last, it's unlikely anymore "conflicting" information will be "given out" by CPP.
If you want to claim now it needs to be for products that were mis-sold BEFORE 14 January 2005.

Even if you bought your policy before 14 January 2005 and it automatically renewed in the years after that, those subsequent years will have formed part of the redress scheme that has now closed, so you cannot claim for these years.

After it was discovered CPP policies were systematically being mis-sold, CPP was fined £10.5 million by the Financial Conduct Authority. CPP then ‘‘volunteered’’ to a central collective redress scheme which was only ever designed to run for a matter of months.

If CPP didn't sell you these policies (or it was sold prior to 2005) you should then complain to the original seller of your policy. In your case this appears to be Barclaycard.

If you do eventually refer to the Ombudsman, it won't look at your complaint until you've contacted your bank and given it eight weeks to respond (or 16 weeks if your complaint was with CPP). Once you have a response, or haven't been given one within eight (or 16) weeks, only then will it be able to investigate your complaint.
