  • There is no "best" deal, if there were we'd all be on it!

First thing is to establish who the incumbent supplier is at the property, if you haven't been informed by letting agency/previous occupants http://www.uswitch.com/gas-electricity/guides/who-supplies-my-electricity-and-gas/

You enter a deemed contract with the incumbent supplier the day you take over the property. Contact them with the meter readings on the day you move in, this will avoid estimated bills. You'll be placed on the standard tariff, never the cheapest but also never has any leaving fees.

You can then look to switch. You need 2 things, the address and the annual amount used. You (or anyone else for that matter) won't know the latter, so you'll have to guess. The UK annual average is 13,500 KWh gas and 3,200 KWh elec annually. This is assuming gas central heating. You can then adjust these figures towards what you'd approximately use. As your house is above average size, I'd be looking to input figures 15-20% above the national average. A monthly payment of £110-120 a month would be a ballpark figure.

thanks, they are with BG now as i understand. i was looking at around £80 a mth as the 4th bedroom is a flying freehold part as it's above a walkway. i'll look on uswitch, i think i have access to all of the suppliers.
  • No problem, although my preference would always be to "overpay" until you get through your first winter and have a handle on how the house behaves energy-wise. Take a look at the thread below for the pitfalls people get into by setting the DD too low and assuming things are fine!

What you pay per month is not relevant-what matters is the annual cost. Base your comp site research on annual kWh usage, never on monthly DD spend, because the later does not give accurate results.

Don't go with Scottish Power. None excistant customer service very poor reviews on trustpilot. I recently used MSE energyclub inputting my usage obviously you can't get exact usage as its a different house to you but may give you a idea of what difference in prices. I am switching to fixed coop tarrif. Decided I no longer want any of the big 6 companies any more

  • in my area, ( S.Yorks ) Extra Energy..gas at 3.30 p /kwhr and electric at 10.9p/kwrh,, standing charge- I cant remember but was lower than most of the big 6. there may be a stampede to them similar to First Utility with those rates
