Gas meter reading
Hi,
I have what appears to be an old Gas meter, by old I mean 1930's old.
At the the top it says "Schlumberger made in England R5" if that helps.
It has 4 digits then 2 red digits off to the right if the 4.
My meter reading only goes up by 1 digit in the 4 digits every few days if not longer. The two red increase faster till it gets to 99 to increase the 4 by 1.
Is this normal?
Is this not a bit slow?
What is average?
My house, which is a mid terraced with a new roof this year, is occupied by my wife and I.
Please put my mind to rest and confirm this is nothing unusual.
Oh, BTW, I'm not a fan of putting the heating on much to the displeasure of my wife.
Thank you

Thats all normal, the 2 red didgets are 100ths of an Imperial unit and are not used when imputting readings, just the first 4 inc. leading zeros. you wont be using much gas in the summer months0

It's most unlikely that your meter is 70+ years old. The red digits are partial units and can be ignored for reading purposes. Is this an old fashioned dial meter, with 4 black dials? Metric or imperial meter (it's marked on it)?
We have no idea if it's 'slow' or not, because we don't know what you use gas for. Do you have gas CH and domestic hot water, gas cooking?
At this time of year the usage is very low because the heating is off and you are only us it for hot water nad maybe cooking: 80% of your annual consumption will typically be in the coldest 3 months.
UK average gas consumption is around 13,500kWh pa, check your bill or annual statements to see what you are using-no one can deduce your actual usage from what you have told us.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Worth pointing out that this is about 46063 cubic feet (old meters)
or 1304 cubic meters (new meters).
Since we are talking about a 4 dial meter it is likely to be cubic meters and fairly modern.0 -
Thanks for all responses received so far.
I just want to establish whether, one digit increase every only few days sounds about right for to people in one terraced house, is normal or sounds correct.0 -
Gas is used for dishwasher, shower and cooking I believe0

Your dishwasher is electric, not gas. So your hot water is also heated by gas? Usage of 1 imperial unit =100 cu ft (assuming an imperial meter) over a 'few days' is too vague to be able to advise you on. But nothing to indicate any abnormality.
What really matters is your annual kWh consumption, give us that and you can be given meaningful advice on whether that usage is typical or not.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Ok thank you for that.0
