I have read the guidance notes online for getting a first adult passport.
I'm now worried because I do not have an original birth certificate for my son and it says copies are not accepted.
Does that mean my son can never have a passport because he does not have an original passport?

Copies means photocopies done by you. The "original" is in a book, every one you get given is technically a copy but its an official/ certified copy and that is perfectly acceptable.
You can get duplicates from the GRO and orders can be done online0 -
Use the official site - £9.25 for a copy of the original entry. (Scam sites will charge £25 or more)
