S-Max Clutch and DMF
I've just had the clutch and DMF replaced in my S-Max 2.0Dti Zetec 59 plate (71K miles) by a local small garage.
Before the replacement, there was no problem selecting any gear (just a grinding when releasing the clutch and vibration at slow speeds).
However, it is now extremely difficult to select first gear. From a standstill I can get it into first gear by putting it into second gear, then immediately into first gear. All others gears are fine.
The garage have said it is due to the gear selector cables being worn and have quoted me £233 to replace.
Does this sound right, or could it be the clutch needs aligning?
Many thanks.

Ask them if they are guessing or whether they will guarantee that will sort the problem. (I haven't a clue)0

Cables need adjusted after the gearbox has been out.
Take it to a garage that knows what they are doing.
Or Google the procedure to adjust the cables.
I think it is the same or similar procedure to the mk3 Mondeo.0 -
If the clutch isn't aligned, the gearbox won't go back on the engine when they are putting everything back together, as the first motion shaft requires the clutch to be aligned so it can slide through the hole in the centre of the friction plate.

Thanks for all the replies.
I've spoken to the garage and they're having it back in again tomorrow to try re-adjust the cable and then take it from there.
They are being really helpful, so I'll see how it goes tomorrow.
They said it is due to wear on the old clutch causing too much slack on the cable!0
