Changing my addresses

Hi there,

I'm looking for advice about what I should do about the address my bank accounts and cards are linked to.

All but one of my bank accounts (I have quite a few as I chase interest rates and perks), my credit cards, and where I am registered to vote is linked to my parents address where I no longer live permanently, although I have reasonably regular access to pick up post.

I have just set up a joint account with my girlfriend which is linked to our rented flat where we now live together. From a credit rating point of view, would it be sensible to move all of my accounts, cards, voting etc to my new address, which will all have to be changed again when we move in a year, or to leave them all linked to my home address where they have been for the last twelve years.

As a point of interest I am hoping to buy a flat sometime in the next two years so will be looking for mortgages.

Any advice from the experts out there would be must appreciated!

For a few months, it is not worth changing. For a few years, it is worth changing. You are expecting to stay at your current address for 1 year so you could go either way depending on the amount of hassle involved. It shouldn't significantly affect your credit rating.

Just make sure that when you do come to apply for future credit/mortgage that your bank address is the same as your electoral role address.

I faced this same dilemma recently; having been 'living' at my parents address for the past 8 years, despite moving every year. I decided that now I'm living with my girlfriend it was the time to move everything to my newest address, so have changed the addresses on almost all accounts and electoral roll.

Given you now have one line of credit at one address, and the rest at another, 'from a credit rating point of view' it would likely look better on your file that all addresses match up. I accept that this move might not look as good from a 'stability' point of view, but I think you set the wheels in motion by getting the new account at your new address. Now you have to follow through to make everything match, and if you are going to do it, the sooner the better.
  • Thanks for the advice both! I think that on balance I am going to stop 'living' with my parents and move everything to my new address, including where I am on the electoral roll.
