16yr old student and working - benefits

Hi, just wanted a bit of a heads up on this while I'm thinking about it.
My 16yr old is starting college full time in Sept but is also trying to find a job. He went for an interview today and seems quite confident about it. This will be for approx. 21 hours per week at min wage.
Can anyone tell me how this may affect my benefits as I currently get some WTC/CTC, housing benefit and child benefit (I also have other younger children).

Thank you

Housing Benefit will also be unaffected.

Your child is considered a dependant for Housing Benefit purposes while they are in full time non advanced education and you are receiving child benefit for them.

Thank you for your replies, very helpful x
  • not a problem as long as he works no more than 24 hours a week in any week
  • There is no restriction to the number of hours as long as the child is in full time non advanced education - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/tctmanual/TCTM02220.htm

i think you should read that again, the 24 hour rule does apply and always has

The 24 hour rule relates to young people who have left education.

"But a customer will cease to qualify for CTC in respect of a young person in full-time non-advanced education or approved training if:

having ceased full-time non-advanced education or approved training, they start remunerative work - that is work done in expectation of payment for 24 or more hours a week, or
they receive Income Support, Income Related Employment and Support Allowance or Income Based Job Seeker’s Allowance in their own right."
