We rented for years. Can't think of any unexpected visits related to renting rather than owning and if you don't live in a pigsty then if/when there's a rare inspection it's not exactly a harship.

Owning makes sense for a lot of people, it isn't magical and it isn't better for everyone in every situation. We moved 3 times in 6 years, would have been left in considerable negative equity if we'd bought the first place, and have an overwhelmingly positive experience renting.

It's hard not to live in a "pigsty" when it's just one room as any/all boxes stacked up will look like a mess.

I had 3-monthly inspections - you're sent a letter telling you which day, no specific time.

The LLs would randomly appear in the garden/driveway as they left their car parked there when they were out of the country .... and one day they randomly turned up as I'd reported a wall cupboard coming away (so they turned up to fix it) ... and another day they randomly turned up as they wanted their car and had forgotten their key, so wanted to come through my front door/room, out into the back garden to get their tools from their shed to remove the lock.
