Refused credit

Hi
I had a missed payment 4 years ago (totally accidentally due to a mix up) of only £89 with Sony card and did pay it in full once I found out but it went on my credit rating and I was refused further credit from anyone.
So I got a Capital One card and have religiously paid it off in full every month for 3.5 years and thought that I would now be able to have an improved score but was turned down after applying for another card.
Is this common and is there any way I can appeal to Experian?

You can only appeal to Experian if the info on your file is incorrect.
Have you checked the other CRAs?0 -
The CC company uses Experian.0

I was so surprised that 3 years of good repaying habits ie I even pay before the due date, has made no difference at all to my credit rating.0
