Paying Australian cheque into UK bank

Hi all, I have a cheque drawn on an Australian bank for an amount in sterling. When I presented it at my bank (Lloyds) I was told it would cost approximately £16 (£8 + a percentage of the total amount) for me to pay it in. This seems a lot, and I was wondering if there was a cheaper way to cash/pay it in, maybe by opening an account somewhere else?
The sender is unable to do bank transfer, so I'm stuck with the cheque. It's a one-off thing, too, so I wouldn't ever need to do this again.
Thanks for your help!
