Who to get to do pre-purchase inspection for used car?

I am going to buy a used car soon and I want to get an expert to check it out for issues e.t.c. I was wondering what options I have. I've seen RAC and The AA do them but I was wondering if anyone can recommend any other companies?

!!!!!!, just typed a really long indepth reply....
Imo they're pointless. Take a friend, look up on what to ask. If really unsure look at approved used cars.
How much you spending? You don't need an aa man to tell you to avoid anything french or Italian.0 -
AA and RAC inspections are good. But if you have a trusted local mechanic who will do it in return for a a few pints down the Nags Head then so much the better. Especially if he / she will be looking after your car in the future. Good mechanics do still exist, as always ask your friends and neighbours for recommendations.0

I can just imagine the mechanic saying 'Naaah mate, you don't want that toyota yaris, come have a look at this 147 instead' and buying you rounds in the pub0 -
I do have a good mechanic that looks after my current car who I would normally get to check it out. It's just that I'm looking at 3.0L BMWs at around £12K so '07-'08 which are not his usual type of thing. I figured a specialist might be in order. I suppose I can see if he's up for it.
Another stumbling block for using my regular mechanic is I'm looking at some cars a bit far away so would be easier to use a company spread out so he's not spending hours driving somewhere.0
