Home & Landlord Insurance

Can someone please help me clarify the difference between home & landlord insurance?
I'm unsure why these are marketed as separate products, I thought we would take out the insurance, tell the company the property is being let & then the tenants should also take out their own contents cover. Is the 'landlord insurance' aimed at people with a number of properties?
We will be letting unfurnished, although the house has built in appliances so would we need building & contents?
Many Thanks!

Home insurance is for when you occupy it as a home.
You need landlord's insurance.0 -

Being a flat, it presumably already has building insurance in place. Have you informed the landlord or managing agent that you are letting the property?
So you only need contents insurance (for your own items supplied as part of the letting). Then again, being a student let, you may well opt not to have contents insurance.
Google throws up loads of options for landlord's contents insurance, but if you are after advice, I suggest you consult an insurance broker.0 -
Home insurance - for your primary residency
2nd Home - for another property that you own and is periodically occupied by you and vacant the rest of the time
Holiday Home - similar to 2nd home but allows for short lets to others
Vacant Home - for a property you own but no one lives in it at all
Landlords - for a property that you permanently rent out to others on a long term basis0
