Style and design of composite front door

I like the idea of replacing our old, upvc double-glazed front door with a composite one, but I'm put off by what I feel is limited style options.

For example, I don't like the wood grain effect, I want the exact colour of my choosing, and I don't like the lever handle look either.

Would choosing a composite door mean I can't be choosy about such things?

sorry to be negative...but the answer is possibly yes!
perhaps a composite door isnt for you.....we have one and in truth find it far more subtantial than the upvc and more robust...but its horses for courses and if you dont like the look of them then perhaps its not something to invest in....

but you will be hard pressed to find a upvc in any colour but white and if you want the exact colour of choice then I guess that limits you further to replacing with a wooden door that you paint

Out of curiosity what colour and finish are you seeking....?

We have one after I at first thought they were a bit naff I now love it as do my neighbors. It does sound like its not for you if you don't like much about them, our installer gave us lots of brochure choices of color style and furniture style and color.

  • This interests me too. I am not too fussed about colour choices but would like a door without the lever handle. Is that possible?

Don't want a mock wood grain finish. In terms of style and colour, this is lovely:

However I'm sure that particular door is a prohibitively expensive wooden one, and as I say, I do like the perceived warmth and security benefits of a composite.

Composite doors are made in a factory using pre formed moulds and presses. I am not aware of any bespoke composite doors, though I have never looked for them. The essence is one is buying a standard, off the shelf, mass produced product. This brings economies of scale and makes the finished door a reasonable price.

Your request is similar to requesting a new Ford Focus, but wanting it with different panels, different door handles, and a colour specific to your tastes. This is unrealistic, and it is probably the same with desire for your door.

Composite doors are a cheap product. If you want bespoke, then a timber door can be made to met your requirements, but is likely to cost more.
  • We had much the same problem. I believe I had viewed every door available and couldn't find just the right thing. In the end we went with Solidor and chose a door from the Italia collection. We are very happy with it. It doesn't have a lever handle but a bar and that has just meant we have locked ourselves out numerous times!

Ah, so you can have a composite door and choice! Thanks chookmom!

Ours has a lever inside but just a pull around the keyhole, iyswim.

Like the other poster, I have locked myself out several times as the door closes and that's it! It does look exactly the way I want though.

(Ours is actually expensive wood but it has the multipoint locking system with lever that you'd find on a composite door, so the priniciple is the same - you aren't forced to have a lever)

I had my composite door fitted by these people www.valuedoors.co.uk ...There are loads of different door styles and options to choose from on their website...I went for a black one from the rockdoor range as it offered greater security options
