You could start by looking at www.upmystreet.com

However the advice there is very generic and you are unlikely to find the answers in enough detail. For example, if I search on my postcode area, the description which comes up only really applies to about half of the zone it covers.

Why not tell us where you're thinking of moving and see if anybody on here has local knowledge? (probably best if you start a whole new thread, with the place name in the title :))

Just echoing the above answer. There are a lot of people on here who have detailed knowledge of most if not all parts of the country. Let us know where you are moving to and i'm sure someone will be able to help

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
    Google.

    Search for "yourarea" and "ASBO".

Search for planning in nearby areas likely to be developed.

Search for "OFSTED" and the names of local schools.

Search for the local council website for amenities and services.

Search for a village or town website. Lots of clubs and societies indicates a good community.

Search for a local newspaper website.

    Search for local message boards.

Search "beerintheevening" to see if that pub at the end of the road is trouble.
    Been away for a while.

There is a good article in this weeks update on here actually

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/mortgages/free-house-prices

One of the tools that I find really useful is the Office of National Statistics

    http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/

It didn't particularly rate my area very highly and I think it's a really nice area - hey ho!!
