So nothing to do with Virgin at all, did the caller actually say he was with the Virgin home mover team or was that just you adding 2 + 2 and getting 439? I'd have to agree with deanna that it's a cold call and you should forget about it - if your LL wants you to leave so he can sell the property he'll issue you with the appropriate notice to quit at the appropriate time.
  • Well, I've got an update as promised. I googled the number that called me (08000520980) which does indeed seem to be affiliated with Virgin. The call was followed up with an email from an account manager at Virgin's "loyalty team".
I'm usually quite savy when it comes to spam/phishing mail and I think this is genuine. The email gave me the guys direct number which google linked to a property management firm. This made me suspicious initially, but I suspect that virgin do a bit of commission based outsourcing work for retentions and this sort of thing.

Anyway as advised above I politely messaged my LL this evening, who unusually failed to respond. Sadly I fear the worst. On the plus side at least Virgin may have tipped me off and bought me some extra time to find a new place without rushing.

Thanks again all and I'll post more when the situation becomes clearer!
