When someone puts an authorisation on your card it affects your AVAILABLE balance, that's probably what they mean.

So if your card balance is £150, and your limit is £200, then they add an authorisation for £10, your available balance will be £40, because there's an outstanding authorisation for £10.

Technically your card hasn't been charged - it would only be charged if the authorisation became a transaction (which then WOULD affect your balance/interest). They have just used it to VERIFY that you could pay if you had to (so if you decide to subscribe, or if you run off with their dvd). So unfortunately the sneaky little bu@@ers are probably within their rights - it's a bit of a dirty trick though really.
