Moving electric underground cable

Hi there
Would much appreciate some knowledgeable advice as I can't seem to get to the bottom of my problem.
We have just inherited my parent's house and received planning permission to build a house in the garden. In the late 80s an electric supply cable was laid under the garden (with permission from my father) to supply a neighbouring sports club pavilion. There was no easement or wayleave. The cable runs underneath what will be the new house. It does not supply our electricity.
Can we just give notice to SSE to remove the cable at their expense? Or do we have to pay for its removal?
Would much appreciate any info as have received conflicting opinions so far.
Many thanks

If you said there was permission from your father, are you sure there isn't an easement?
If not, then yes you can ask SSE to remove their assets/equipment and you shouldn't be charged for this.
