gravel on road?

Theres a stretch of road on my way to work that has just been resurfaced, in 2 different sections about a month apart. The first, is a straight 60 which they have laid this gravel stuff, but theres a level crossing on that road, and all the gravel gathers on the rail lines so the trains end up going a lot slower, which means the barriers are down longer. I always knew that 1 train crossing would take 2mins 20secs, now it takes 4mins 6secs (I get very bored waiting for the barriers to com up).
The next stretch of road, which joins on to this new gravel part but at the opposing end to the level crossing, has been resurfaced and is mainly a straight 60 but does cut through a bendy 40 village, and this stretch has been laid with proper tarmac, causing the road to be closed at night for 2 weeks whilst they worked.
The tarmac feels much nicer than the gravel, even if the gravel provides more grip, but there are already potholes appearing and it was only laid in June.0 -
they did this surface dressing on the road behind my house in may, the road is already 35% covered in pot holes and one speed hump has exposed grated patches from the surface underneath. council has been back round again to mark them up for pot hole repair! what a waste of money.0

Even our terrible LA has stopped this pantomime way of fixing the roads. It used to consist of two days of stop-go men blocking a 50m stretch of road, one week of vehicles squishing two narrow tracks in either direction of chippings into the treacle, two days of stop-go men blocking the road to clear some of the mess up, then a week later the gully suckers attempting to clear the drains of the loose gravel.
It's what you get when you don't vote and are content with lowest tender wins maintenance.0 -
When on a 'bike if I get caught out by one of these "roads", the thing that worries me most is falling off if I need to change direction or apply the brakes.
In the car, it is the sound of the loose chips damaging the protective coating under the car, causing tiny holes that allow salty water in to corrode away the steel that I have worked my row out to pay for.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

There's nothing wrong with surface dressing roads IF it's done properly and not as a quick-fix for a road that's already breaking up.
Unfortunately, many of the roads in this counry are breaking up and surface dressing over patchwork "repairs" (ofen some guy with a can of tar pouring it into the poholes) isn't a solution to that.0 -

Or having someone overtake or come the other way meaning I'm on the end of a gritblasting!!!!0 -
Its a cheap tactic by local councils and any road user regardless of the number of wheels they use should be against this method.
Talking of which there is a petition doing the round on twitter on the very same thing http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/674080
