Gas v Oil in a house

i can only talk from my experience but we put the gas boiler in place of the redundant immersion water tank which was inside a cupboard in our bathroom. our plumber looked at a few places to locate it from kitchen to hallway but it made more sense to swap like for like (valiant boiler is about the size of the purple bottle recycling boxes the council provide)0

Gas boilers are fitted in the house to an outside wall as they need venting
You also need a carbon monoxide detecter fitted
The installation has to be done by a gas safety engineer. This is vital so do check your plumber is registered
Gas boilers are small and slim line so are pretty unobtrusive. You can build a cupboard around them as long as they are sufficiently ventilated and can be accessed for maintenance0 -
We switched to gas at the start of this year. Would not go back to oil and have found gas to be cheaper and more efficient.
The initial outlay for installation was £2200 but our last quarterly bill was £47 - this for hot water and heating for a 3 bed semi with two adults and two young children as occupants. I think we were spending over £600 on oil annually.
The extra space in the attic, shed outside and the hot press comes in handy too.0 -
Is the gas boiler something similar in size to a standard oil boiler?
Is a gas boiler usually located in an external shed/garage, or in the house?
A gas boiler would typically be smaller (and usually cheaper) than an oil boiler. In my experience they are usually installed inside the house, I have never seen an outdoor one0 -
to be a MSE, check out NIHE gas grants; http://www.nihe.gov.uk/index/benefits/boiler_replacement_allowance.htm :money:

Swopped from oil to gas this time last year and wouldn't go back.
Definitely cheaper to run, but obviously have to factor in around £1900 for the conversion (always seems to be around this for a 3 bed semi regardless of what offers are running)
Main advantages for us were much more instant heat than oil, and instant hot water (very important for us as we can now run a bath in the summer for our 2 small children without having to pump the electric for the immersion).
Also I like the fact you don't have to worry about to keep check the oil level and also no need to worry about running out over the xmas period.
We had two thermostats fitted when the conversion was happening - one for upstairs and one for downstairs and had the system split into these 2 zones. This help to reduce cost further as you could just heat the top floor if you were going to bed and not the whole house.
Another factor worth considering is the efficiency of the boiler you are getting - all are not the same.0 -
