You would probably be better of changing Sterling over there as & when you need it. You will get a better rate.

Most shops bars etc work in Pounds Euros Dollars & Lira

in the Antalya area, its euros then lira that everything is priced in - we just take cash in sterling and change it to lira there, there are change offices all over the place in the resorts. You get a better rate changing your sterling to lira in Turkey, compared with doing it here in the UK before you go.

What do you think you'll be spending money on? Cigarettes are typically 9 lira for one pack of 20 in the Antalya resort areas.

It's about 3.5/3.6 TL to the pound at the moment. I'd agree that you should change sterling for lira in any bank or Post Office when you get there. The rates in shops are quite good too. Very little to choose between the slightly lower rate in shops compared to the commission in PTT (Post Office) or bank. Hopefully you are planning to leave your complex and see a bit of Antalya (old town is lovely).

I always buy cigarettes either at Gatwick or as soon as you arrive at the airport in Turkey (duty free shops near luggage carousel). That's because I prefer to have my usual brand. Prices tend to be about a third/quarter of the price here depending on what you buy.

Remember Turkey isn't in EU so you should only bring 200 each back.

Not all money changers are completely honest. So make sure that whoever you use doesn't charge commission.

Make sure you check what you've been given before you leave the counter. A 50TL note doesn't look much different from a 5TL note. Don't get fobbed off with any torn or defaced notes by anybody.

€uros are widely accepted, as is £sterling. But you'll always get better value by paying in TL, and change will always be given in TL.

Watch out for mobile shoe shine boys walking past you, and suddenly they 'accidentally' drop a shoe brush in front of you. Just ignore it.

The dedicated tourist areas aren't the 'real' Turkey, so I hope you don't come back with a wrong impression.

Last time I went , family of three , I spent less than £50 out side of the hotel.
  • It is always best to change your money in Turkey or withdraw lira from the ATMs. Use lira when you are out there, they may quote in euros but you will get a better deal in local currency.

As for how far your money will go it depends on what you are going to do with it. There are plenty of shopping opportunities to spend it on and day trips.
