The banks should all provide current accounts for free, and to everybody. The banks and business in general have been pushing us towards a cashless economy for years. Who gets paid in cash now? Very few. Where I work won't pay in cash because its easier and cheaper to do bank transfers. Likewise the banks themselves find it easier and cheaper to do those transfers at a central point, which is why all our local branches are dying out.
Then look at insurance. How much to insure the 4 weekly payroll for 700 staff. Astronomical. How much would Tesco's take in cash each day, and what would the security cost.
Likewise, if those 700 people I work with turned up at Lloyds TSB next tuesday and took out a grand each, I bet the bank wouldn't be happy.

Fact is that in our society you must have a bank account. They should be free and readily available to every one.
    Regards

You are right in saying that these accounts make no money for the banks but take up staffing resources to open and maintain them.

I'm sure they can just about afford it.

I would agree with you but as everything I do is sales driven in the bank these days I cannot afford to take the moral high ground.

I declared myself bankrupt last April (so now discharged) and applied to Barclays to open a CASH CARD ACCOUNT, I had no problems with opening it, you can have direct debits and if you do telephone banking you can pay your bills and transfer money elsewhere no problem, their cash card allows you to take money out of any cashpoint machine (unlike some other banks which only allow you to use their own machines), but you cant have standing orders or go overdrawn at all tho.
