Barclays won't let me have my money

I've had a barclays bank account since I was 7. I am now in my 40s. I am married and have a joint Lloyds account which I pay my salary into and then move some money per month into my Barclays. I have used the barclays account quite a bit and it was overdrawn.
I was paying for this overdraft and paid interest. I noted that for some reason I was also paying £5 PPI. I had never requested or authorised this payment. This was alongside my overdraft fees & interst. I raised this issue with Barclays and received a letter back saying they were closing my account along with my business account.
I was assured this wasn't in relation to my PPI claim. Not a problem as I am not a fan of Barclays so made efforts to switch bank accounts. Both my persona & Business (which is alway in credit but is still being closed). I did finally get my PPI back and this put my current account in credit. I moved the money out ut left some to keep it in credit. When I tried to withdraw some of this cash my card was withheld. Speaking to the account manager they said there was nothing they could do. Effectively, Barclays are holding onto my money until they close my account. Is this fair?

If you pop into any Barclays branch with appropriate forms of ID, (and for the business account, perhaps appropriate authority) they will be able to close the account(s) there and then and refund you any balance.
(If there is an overdraft on the account, they will need that paid off by cleared funds before they will close the account)0 -
Might not be fair, but I'm not sure there's much you can do, as they'll probably finalise the account closure and pay the balance (it's not clear whether you are actually switching to a new bank or not - if you are then the balance will be transferred) long before a complaint would have any effect. If you can be bothered you could make a complaint after you've got the money back.0
