Hi
My husband and I are thinking of a holiday to New York in October 2015. We have no idea how much we will need to save to cover the cost of it all including flights and hotel.
If anyone has been would you mind letting me know how much the trip cost you and where you stayed?
Thanks
Michala

Hard to give an average as it will depend upon the time of year, what sort of hotel you want and what you plan to do. You get get a hotel for less than $100/night in the outskirts or more than $500/night if you want 5* luxury in the centre of Manhattan.
I'd look at some flight+hotel deals on sites such as Expedia and Ebookers to give you an idea of some likely prices.0 -
Thank you Doshwaster. We have been toying with the idea of going for a few years but always ended up in other places. We would want to do the usual touristy things and as for where we'd like to stay, we aren't bothered about super posh but likewise we don't want cheap and dirty! I think we do need to look into it all more seriously!Michala0

For flights you'd be looking at £500-600 each. The LON-NYC route is one of the most competitive in the world so that does keep prices down. Then how much you want to spend on a hotel is up to you so I'd suspect you'd be looking at a budget of £2000-2500 for two. Plus spending money of course!
Flights for October 2015 won't be out yet and it may be worth waiting until the airline sales are on which are typically in the New Year.

That's what I was thinking for flights and accommodation and then spending money on top. Best start tightening our belts!!!!Michala0 -

I'd recommend looking at IcelandAir. You can go to JFK via Reyjavik with up to a 7 day stopover on the way there or back. Flights on that route can be £400 and the connection time is pretty short.0

Flights are cheap, Manhattan is expensive for most things but short trips outside of it and the prices come down a lot (though still not down to the normal US prices)
How much you will need depends on what you want to do. The USA has a much more casual feel to it than the UK but that doesnt mean that just because everyone in a restaurant is in jeans and t-shirt that the steaks arent $60 each plus $10 for each side.0 -

Of course. The prices I gave were for a week but, to be honest, I find 3 or 4 nights in New York to be enough for a single trip. You'll never be able to do everything in a week so there's no point in even trying. A longer trip would only really be worth it if you plan to get out of the city for a couple of days.
Another option would be to look at an open jaw trip. 4 nights in NYC then return via 2-3 nights in Boston, Philly or DC.0
