I will be needing a new kitchen soon and my son, who has his own bespoke kitchen company has told me not to touch gloss laminate (I had one before which blew up because damp got into a joint) ordinary laminate, wood, or granite... he only recommends a composite stone to his customers.

I guess if someone is buying a bespoke kitchen, they probably have the budget for whatever worktop they want. Not everyone has the money, or desire, to spend £000s on a kitchen worktop.

My last (laminate) worktop was over 20 years old and only got replaced because the kitchen was being extended. It was still in excellent condition, even after all that time.
  • From what I've read here I'm pretty much convinced that our laminate worktops weren't sealed nicely and possibly weren't looked after very well. That being said I still don't really like it as a worktop but I'm trying to keep an open mind. Perhaps there are better quality laminates than the one we had, I'll have a look at my local B&Q tomorrow.

I had Duropal laminate done in my new kitchen 2 years ago and it is still in excellent condition.

And after only 2 years it absolutely should be excellant, the OP's are only just failing after 10 and they are standard laminate.
