Mini break

Hi,
I want to have a mini break in the UK end of october early november.
Perhaps a 5/6 hour drive from the south east kent area, maybe somewhere that has train journeys (not miniature railways) in the region? Unspoilt countryside and nice places to eat.
Any suggestions please?

Maybe have a look at Bala in Mid/North Wales?
Equidistant to the railways at Llangollen, Blaenau Ffestiniong (sp?) and Welshpool.
Haven't been to Bala in decades so cannot comment on accommodation or food choices in the area but you will be spoiled for unspoiled countryside in that part of the world.
Weather could be an issue though, pack a brolly!Spring Fesitval Challenge: Save health & money! Day 1/7

How about the North York moors, we have the North Yorkshire moors railway from Pickering to Whitby. Plenty of countryside and lots of nice places to eat.Owner of a cute cottage in the North York Moors :j0

What about Shropshire? You have got the Severn Valley Railway, Llangollen Railway and Welshpool and Llanfair Railway, and lots of lovely countryside.0

Bit left field but what about somewhere like Porlock (North Devon). You've plenty of access to unspoilt countryside on Exmoor, nice circular walk from there up round Selworthy Beacon, back through the village of Selworthy with its thatched cottages (bit touristy but in October will be quiet). Similarly up through Horner Combe onto the Dunkery Beacon area. If you want a bit more life then you are fairly close to Minehead (which in turn gets you on to the West Somerset Railway which gives you Dunster, and Watchet as options to visit).
With all these heritage lines watch the dates and check what they will be running as many scale back services during the autumn for maintenance.
Picking up the suggestion of Shropshire - if you picked your location you could also access the Central Wales railway line which gets you to places like Knighton and the area around Knucklas which is pretty remote and quiet. That is a "BR" railway so should be running all year.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
Some lovely suggestions, thank you I will start doing some homework on these places.0

Well I have finally decided where to go for my mini break,I am looking in and around Matlock. I have been browsing Tripadvisor for a nice small B&B ( dislike anything bigger than 6/8 bedrooms) oh my, so many to choose from! It looks a beautiful area and enough for us to do for a few days :j
Thanks again for your suggestions.

Good choice.
Also, Matlock, Matlock Bath, Bakewell, Hathersage or Monsal Head are fantastic places with beautiful sights. There are a couple of B&B's in Monsal Head with views to die for. Have a look on google for the areas mentioned. I'm sure you will be impressed.
I will see if I can find the name of the B&B's for you. Make sure you take plenty of jumpers though.
