Mine runs out the end of the month, i got the reminder a couple of weeks ago and thought you could apply as soon as that arrived.

If the car is currently VED'd then I think that works.

If the car is not currently taxed, you cannot buy tax before the 1st of the month, I've tried before on the 31st of a month with a SORN'd vehicle :(.

If the car is currently taxed, the earliest application date is on the renewal notice, I taxed my car last week, I think I shredded the form.

Yes, you can. Two working days. I've done it several times.

I thought that was the case, as it takes at least 2 days to arrive in the post, but it didn't work online when I tried it, kept giving a start date of the current month, not the next one, and no option to change.

Maybe the site works properly now, it is usually some form of beta....

Postal time's irrelevant anyway - because there's an exemption from displaying the disc if you've already ordered it online and it's not arrived yet. B'sides, it works at Post Offices, too.
