Transfer from JSA to ESA

Hello Everybody, How do I transfer over to Employment Support Allowance from Job Seekers Allowance.
Just a background to what happened. I was originally claiming ESA. Then I went for medical at ATOS. I failed that so my ESA stopped. I just received my mandatory reconsideration notice. I received an extra 9 points from the DWP but unfortunately, it still wasn't enough for the original decision to be overturned. I would now like to appeal that decision.
At the moment I am claiming JSA. If I claimed ESA would the process be straightforward in regards to payments? Would I need to get a sick note from my Doctor? Any help would be appreciated it. Thank You

How long is it since you 'failed' and ESA stopped? If it's more than 6 months you can claim immediately as long as you have a sick note. If it's less than 6 months you will probably need to have a medical assessment before ESA can be paid.
If you are claiming for a new illness, it must be one which wasn't listed during your previous assessment (even if it wasn't on the sick notes).0 -
Hi Keith, Thank for your reply. My ESA stopped in July. I am going to appeal the decision. I want to ask the DWP to specifically go back to ESA. But can anyone please tell me how I transfer from JSA to ESA? Thank You0

You need to make the appeal and once DWP see your appeal on their "system" you stop claiming JSA close the claim and they reinstate your assessment rate for ESA until your appeal.
So i've heard anyway. I'm currently going through the same process.0 -
Hi Paragon, I am putting my appeal in tomorrow. Are you sure the DWP automatically transfer me over to ESA once I have submitted my appeal papers? From, what I heard you have to specifically ask. Does anyone know the answer? If not that's okay I will just the CAB.0

Once you appeal and your appeal is on system you will need to sign off JSA and then get a fit note from your GP they will then put you on the assesment rate of ESA until the appeal is heard.0 -
Thanks Richard, Sorry for my late reply. So, just to clarify for one final time. I just need to post my SSCS1 form. Then, I get a sick note from my DR for a length of time. How do I sign off JSA? Do I write to the ESA department, phone the ESA department or ring the new claims line? Thanks0

Do you have an ES40 (Still called that?) card? It's given at the new claim interview and there's a part at the back that can be sent back to sign off.
You will need to let ESA know that you want to be paid on appeal as some people do choose to claim JSA for the duration of their appeal as they can be better off doing so.
Your appeal has to be valid, within time limits (or lateness being accepted), be accompanied with medical evidence and then you should be fine.0
