Just an update. I bought the £2.50 adaptor lead through Ebay. It does not work. There is a driver problem it would seem. I am not sorry I bought it though as £2.50 hardly broke the bank.
I will probably try to get a card for the computer, or maybe even see if I can get an old Windows XP computer on Ebay. I think they sell for about £60 and it might come in handy for other things. For example I have a Canoscan LIDE 30 scanner which will not work on Windows 7 or 8 as the driver was not updated beyond Windows XP. At least a free driver that is - I can get one from Vuescan which works beautifully, but you have to pay I think about $40 if you want to print from it without having their watermark.
