They pay the supplier directly. You are then sent the laptop.

For paper etc you are given a certain allowance for consumables. You buy the items and submit the receipts for repayment.

thanks so much for the replies
do they chose a laptop or can one have a say in the type one recieves?
a notepad would be better suited to me, as its easier to transport.
it would also need a cover as i can be very clumsy at times.

They choose one for you. You may not even get a laptop. Not every disabled student does.

But they should discuss with you first what you need, and if a notebook with a cover is on that list, then that's what you'll get. Equally they may be able to suggest other things which might be just as good or better.

If they give you a laptop they will also give you a bag to carry it in.

I was asked whether I preferred one with a shoulder strap or a carrying handle.

ETA: Sorry, that's wrong. They asked me if I'd prefer a bag with a shoulder strap or a rucksack-style bag.
  • That's interesting as we're still waiting for the authoristion to get my daughter's laptop. My OH wants to buy a better one so I hope they contact us soon about it as she starts in three weeks.

Perhaps it might be an idea for your daughter to chase this up if time is getting tight?

We have no idea who to chase it up with. She had her assessment two months ago and we had a letter from the assessor with a list of recommended equipment and a covering letter saying that we would be contacted about the authorised supplier. since then, nothing.

That's a tricky one. If it was me i'd contact the assessment office/assessor, either they can deal with it or point you towards the supplier.
