  • All circumstantial. I'm a student (I also earn £20k p.a on the side) and I got approved for £14k of finance on a £20k Citroen. They never asked for my income, I had less than 2 years of credit history (although it was decent for that, had a credit card since my 18th birthday and always paid it in full, same for phone contract).

I guess it's all hit-and-miss. There was a £4,500 Citroen deposit contribution that on the finance application was just included with my own deposit, so I have a feeling that probably helped. So long as you have no defaults/CCJ's, it's worth a shot.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

2 defaults and an arrangement to pay. They're now 5 1/2 years old but about 5 years old when I applied for finance. I applied for and was given £14k finance at a fairly decent rate, given my past history, of about 8%.

Not the best rate but certainly better than some of the sub prime lenders.

I would hold off taking out any further credit until all your defaults are a few years old and are all satisfied.
