Car hire at Murcia Airport.

Hi
Never hired a car in Spain before so would like some advice. Can anyone recommend a good car hire company. Need a decent four door Ford Focus style. Do the cars come with all the insurance I will need. Dont want to get ripped off :p

Many thanks for any replies.

Depends which company you use. Some will come with basic insurance and may have a very high excess which you may have to pay in full even for a little scratch.

You can get additional cover to reduce the excess or wipe it out.

Do your homework before you go.

Whilst it was Alicante rather than Murcia that I previously used them, I believe the company also services Murcia. The company in question is Dickmanns. I had no problems with them and the pricing was competitive as I recall.

No matter which company you use, take several photos of the vehicle when you collect it so you can prove the vehicle state. (In case they try to claim any damage - photos should prove whether or not the damage was present on collection).

Ha. Assuming you mean San Javier airport?
We visit Murcia a lot but usually drive. On a brief visit earlier this year however we flew and hired a car. We added in the car hire at the end of the flight booking, seemed reasonable cost etc. All was fine til it came to finding the car hire desk! In the terminal there was a couple, Gold Car and one other (maybe Europcar?) ours was Hertz.
After asking a lot of questions and wandering around the terminal and car park for 20 minutes we finally found our car hire 'desk' It was a van in the car park, accompanied by a van behind it with a generator etc in it. You went to the van and queued at the little hatch! Car was fine and service was ok but it was a very odd set up, there were also a few other car hire firms out on the car park with similar vans. It might be that this happens a lot but I've never come across it before for sure.

  • A lot of car hire firms in Spain insist that you pay upfront - at above the going rate - for a tank of fuel and bring it back empty, forfeiting any fuel that you don't manage to use.

However I found Solmar did it the way we tend to do it in the UK where you don't pay them for the fuel and you just bring it back with a full tank.

I hired a car when in the Portuguese Algarve last year and used the search tools on the main MSE travel pages.
When I've hired a car in UK and abroad ive always paid their excess cover so should there be any damage im covered...

There are quite a few car hire companies operating out of vans in the car park at San Javier.
    Dickmanns is one of them.
Whatever you do DO NOT hire a car with Goldcar......
Do a search on here if you want all the horror stories !!
I fly though San Javier quite a bit & Goldcar have huge queues......could take up to 2 hours to get your car.
I dont hire cars now but I used to use these people...

Try AutoReisen, they've been good for me in the Canaries and elsewhere.

Never had a bad experience with Centauro. Used them many times at Alicante, although not from Murcia.

Last used them in September 2013 from Malaga. £19 total for 3 days for a 5 door C-Max, plus £17 for full excess protection.

I always book through Holiday Autos in the UK, but specify Centauro as the rental company.

    Favourable fuel policy too!
