Where to look for budget accommodation on the Yorkshire coast

I'm planning a solo 4 or 5 day trip in September to my 'home' area - North Yorkshire. I've so far had no luck with finding a cheap stay - e.g. a single in a B&B for under £50 per night. Airbnb seems to have made the transition from budget to bijou so they are out, and Housetrip doesn't have anything much there. I don't have any camping gear.
I am a longtime YHA member and the Whitby hostel seems to have space, but I'm not keen on staying on my own in YHA as I'm more than a bit older than the "Y" and doubt I'd feel comfortable. Maybe I'm wrong about that?
So does anyone know of a way to find non YHA budget accommodation for singles?
Thanks.

How about a holiday cottage? http://www.whitby-cottages.net/cgi-bin/details.cgi?pkey=262&qkey=185&CALDATE=07-03-2014
This one's £225 for the whole week, and looks like there's an offer of 25% off that. You have to pay a booking fee, but again you get a bit if discount if you are taking it for a four night stay instead of the week
Although you would probably be fine in the YHA - when we stayed there was a complete range of ages.0 -
Thanks. It's booked in Sep but still I'll have a look around that website and other links to see what else there might me.0

This one's available for most of September, £320 a week (sorry the link i sent before was low season prices) but they are offering 30% discount for whole weeks, so should hopefully meet your budget. (You don't have to stay the whole week but the pricing makes sense)0 -
We have stayed at the Sunningdale Guest House in Scarborough and they currently have single rooms available in September for £30 a night. Hope this helps0

That puzzles me, if you have been using hostels for a while surely you must have discovered they're used by people of all ages. I'm 55, and I find plenty of people of my generation. The YHA have been known to worry about their long term future because of the difficulty in persuading youngsters to take up hostelling. If you're on your own I think that hostels are better than the alternatives because there's more opportunity to meet others, especially in the members kitchen if you self cater. In turn, self catering saves a lot of cash.
I eat for about £5-6 a day self catering, Whitby hostel is £21 most nights in September, Boggle Hole is about £15-20. Scarborough hostel isn't posting it's prices online now it's independent. If you go B&B it'll be £30-40 plus another £20 for food if you have to buy it all prepared.
(The only places I recall feeling out of place among teenagers were at a couple of independents: Oxford Backpackers in Hythe Bridge St., and Matts Surf Lodge in Newquay.)0 -
The YHA in Whitby is in a great location. I would feel safe on my own in a Youth Hostel, although would probably like to have my own room if I could afford it. I agree that the option of doing some self catering would appeal too.
What about a static caravan on a quiet park? We have had some great bargains in these and it will be out of school holiday times. https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk will give you some sites to look at. You can often get a Monday to Friday booking out of peak seasons.
I know you dont have any camping gear but what about a camping pod? You might need an airbed and sleeping bag but probably not a lot else.
Its such a tourist area there must be somewhere you can find in your budget, good luck!0 -
Thanks to all - a really useful selection of suggestions and ideas. Helping me to think around this as well as finding out new options.
Journalgirl - thanks for the cottage link - a definite possibility - will ring them Monday.
Kitty - a good suggestion. I was hoping to be near Whitby but maybe I will think about Scarborough too.
Jack - you obviously thrive in the YHA, and yes it can be very cheap, but as I said I’m not so sure on my own.
Yorkshirelass – I agree Whitby hostel is a great location. Not ruled it out, just wondering. And thanks for the caravan idea - will look around.0 -
