From my experience of using a 3g dongle on trains, i dont think its going to get you what you need.
I would be looking at downloading whatever work you need to do to your laptop and modifying it there. If you're using email you can generally "send" and then it send when it connects again.
I dont think you're going to get anything stable enough to run a connect to a remote server or anything like that.0 -
I used to rant about how poor this service was considering it is the obvious business transport link between the two cities.
its embarrassingly bad!
Both Irish Rail and NI Railways have decent WiFi on their services but why not on the enterprise?
sometimes the WiFi isnt even switched on so no chance you will get connected and other times you have to sign in and out about 40 times and just give up!
I stopped even bothering to use it since last year and just tether my phone as i have 2 sims.
shocked all the same that they still havent sorted this basic of services out!0 -
I have a mobile broadband dongle from 3 and have never had any issues with it.
We took it to Donegal with us over the Summer and it worked a treat,in the car as well, though I have never used it on the train.
Would recommend it to anyone,HTH0 -

Bit different when you're hurtling along at 70mph and its constantly gaining and dropping signals.
The o/p still hasnt really been very explicit about what they are doing that requires a permanent constant connection?0 -
To update, I purchase a mifi device on Three. It was ok, patchy and intermittent in parts.
@Mr Bun, do you find this with tethering your iphone?0 -
It's always going to be patchy and intermittent though, regardless of which network you're on, because you're travelling in a train at 70mph whilst depending on a signal from a mobile cell tower in some reasonably remote areas. Particularly with 3, you'll find their coverage can be limited out in the countryside.
This is part of the reason why the Enterprise Wifi itself is ropey - it depends on the mobile network also for its connectivity. Although mainly it's because it just doesn't work half the time.0 -
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I went with 3 as they have no roaming charges but Im open to suggestions. Today is only day 1 of use.0
