Non fault accident

Hi,

Im looking at upgrading my car. In 2012 one of my neighbours reversed off his drive into me (sun was in his eyes). He admitted fault, he reported it to his insurance but then we decided to sort it out between us. I told my insurance company, everyone happy.

I have had a 1 ltr corsa with cheap insurance so never really bothered about it with regards to insurance until now.

Doing some quotes on the new car its making around £150-200 difference for the year.

So im wondering if there are any insurers who will not charge any more for none fault accidents. I understand insurers think I will be more likely to cause my next accident (assuming there is one) but this is just one of those things where I was doing absolutely nothing wrong and seems a bit harsh.

I dont really want to knock on my neighbours and argue it out as it was 2 years ago, hes going to think im trying to pull a fast one and in all honesty if roles were reversed I would be thinking he was a nut job.

I imagine the comparison sites insurers would probably ignore it if they were going to ignore it and me calling up directly is going to make very little difference - but it might be worth a try?

TBH I don't beleive in my experience that they automatically increase the premium, my premiums didn't change by any drastic amount, other than when I changed my vehicle to a more powerful more expensive one, and the premium almost halved.

Follow the normal process for getting quotes. Check the comparison sites and the few larger players that dont go onto the sites.

There are some insurers that traditionally didnt used to inflate premiums for 1 non-fault accident if that was the only thing on your record but if they are sky high for your choice of location and vehicle etc then they are still going to be sky high with the non-fault accident

By the sounds of it you have been playing with what data you are giving, hopefully you have been using dummy data to do this with as otherwise many insurers will load the premiums anyway due to the disparity in information. You either had a claim or didnt, the fact you are quoting with or without it will make them concerned that you are a fraud risk and are trying to manipulate the data to get your best quote rather than answering truthfully.

Of cause you may be unlucky and be the ideal candidate for an insurer who hates any claims history hence why you are seeing the big jump between having a claim or not.

    I am using dummy data.

No issue of non disclosure, I will disclose it. I was just checking how much of an impact that one issue is having, which seems to be quite significant.

You're unlikely to get any recourse from the neighbough so probably something to avoid

I know, I wouldnt even bother knocking on. Ive looked at that as if roles were reversed and I would think he was a headcase.

I dont know him as hes down the road but every time we see eachother now we do a little hello wave (not as camp as it sounds) or man nod thing.

This insurance thing, its such a git. It does annoy me that I have to pay more for someone elses mistake which cost neither insurance company a penny.

  • As you've now found out, if you can come to an amicable gentlemans agreement over a minor thing like this, then the best thing is to keep schtum.

I wasnt going to mention it. He told his insurance then realised his excess was £250 (on a £300 job) so hes now got the worst of both worlds.

I went out of my way and even haggled with the mechanic to get the price down in order to avoid the insurance. Grrr.

Excess is only payable when making a claim on your own policy. So he wouldn't have paid an excess for repairs to your vehicle as it would be a third party claim being made against his insurance.

    I've had exactly the same.

Damage would have cost £200 to repair if I'd done it myself and not reported. Has now cost me £250 in additional premiums. Lesson learned, never report non fault minor damage.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
