Thanks John, I took the whole mechanism out of the cistern, took it apart cleaned up the washers and.... it still overflows!
Will need a new one now.
By the way the red thing was important - it was a locking mechanism - once removed with pliers the top part comes off.
Well, you got it at last. Replace with a new good'un, they don't last forever remember?I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

Sorry, didn't mean that to offend, I simply meant they almost always needs replacement when they give trouble, I'd have bet next weeks pension on it:rotfl:
I actually did post earlier but it's either disappeared or I didn't click send.
I basically said don't waste your time trying to fix it, get a replacement and make a proper job of it.;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

I'm a lot more satisfied having fixed it just with a clean up, and if it needs replacing in future I now know how to do it -the part is about £13 from screwfix. It turns off without 1 drip coming through so I think it was some grit in the cistern that got under the washer - you can see it in the pic. No thanks to the builder who put it in....0 -

Actually the grit in the cistern has probably come through the water supply rather than the builder, some of them come with filters to stop the grit.
Almost the exact thing happened to us, a bit of grit got stuck in the valve that shuts off the water meaning it was constantly filling.
I know it wasn't the "builder" because I put it in and there was definitely no grit at first but there is now!0
