Hi all,
My cistern is overfilling and leaking into the bowl. My guess is that some grit is in the valve and I want to clean up the seal - I don't want to force it - how do I unscrew it:

Any other educated guesses as to why it is overflowing are gratefully received! How do I get the siphon out to check - twist it?

blue thing in the corner , the part that's sitting in water. is for setting water level
the half circle in centre is for setting how much is flushed.
Either the washer has gone or the setting for water level is out. Could also be water pressure is high.(there is no need for it to be on full). you may have a valve on the pipe work leading to toilet.0 -
Our cistern the cap just twists of at the top like a bottle top. then you just replace the washer/cut a new one.
make sure water is turned off lol(everything we have put in our house has isolation valves installed)0 -
How do I detach the float from the valve so that I can actually turn it.
Is the red thing significant?0 -
looks like float is on a metal hanger. either detach metal hanger or detach white arm. unsure about the red tab.0

Thanks John, I took the whole mechanism out of the cistern, took it apart cleaned up the washers and.... it still overflows!
Will need a new one now.
By the way the red thing was important - it was a locking mechanism - once removed with pliers the top part comes off.0 -
sometimes depending on the type off washer you can turn it round to the opposite side.
as long as you have not broke anything you should be able to fix.
does it still overflow if you set flush/fill level low?
remember you can buy new washers.0 -
Well I know there's at least one person in here eager to know the outcome!
I took it apart again and this time twisted off the locking plastic ring inside the blue cover. Under this was another washer which was certainly the culprit - cleaned it up with paper towels, reassembled all and so far the water has stayed at the water line.
Cheers John0 -
Without wishing to hijack the thread, I have the same setup and suffer very slow fill. How can I improve things please? This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

Is there a screw valve on the metal pipe leading into your cistern?0

If it slow fill more that likely water pressure. But you are best not to have it full pressure anyway. It just ruins the sealing washer quicker.
as robatwork said there may be a valve on outside of cistern/pipework leading to it.
I put a 15mm ball valve on just about everything I fit lol saves turning water off at mains lol0
