Painful Hiccups

This may sound like a funny one, but i'm not laughing.
All my adult life, I have been having very painful hiccup's - they hurt my chest, stomach and back and leave me totally breathless.
I've tried several techniques, gripe water and a couple of other remedies that I can't remember the name of.
I'm loathed to go to my doctor as the rare times I see him, he never takes me serious anyway and I don't feel this would be taken serious.
The hiccups usually last for about 15-20 minutes at around 20 second intervals, the ones I am having right now, about 40 minutes and they hurt alot
Are there any remedies on the market that may help? I'm not flush, but if something is worth trying, i'll splash a few £

Poor Miroslav
I get hiccups rarely and can always stop them within a couple of minutes of them starting................I can't imagine having hiccups for 20 - 40 minutes.
My method for stopping hiccups is to take a deep breath in and then firmly pinch my nostrils while keeping my mouth shut.
I've never timed myself to see how long I can hold my breath...........but it feels like more than a couple of minutes.............and then when I exhale...........the hiccups have gone.
I imagine you've tried holding your breath and it doesn't work for you.:o
Having just read my Family Medical book for more information, I suggest that you see your GP to rule out a stomach or bowel condition.;)
I hope you're soon feeling better.

Couple of random remedies which have sometimes worked for me...
- Put a cold teaspoon on the uvula (dangly bit, back of throat, be careful not to make yourself gag)
- When I got chronic hiccups on a student pub craw once, a fellow crawler took my wrist and started massaging the pulse point. Not sure if it was the massaging, or the surprise, but the hiccups stopped!
Thankfully, I don't get them all that often, although I do do random, single hiccups intermittently, most days! (I joke that I hiccup when I'm hungry, and when I've just eaten... hope it's nothing more sinister!) When I do get proper hiccups it's no joke... although it's not usually painful until it's been going 10 minutes or more. (VERY annoying)

I presume you've tried all the usual remedies like drinking out of a glass backwards. I had a colleague who insisted that if you held your ears as well as your nose and mouth closed they would go.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Old style hiccups remedy No. 4
Hold your clenched hands out 6 inches away from you mid chest
Now put your middle finger tips together
Now move them apart just the width of a cigarette paper
Concentrate totally on maintaining this distance for 3/4 minutes
Hiccups gone ?.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Thanks all. Will try some of these remedies and see if they work!
Not sure about the spoon on the uvula though
Had a look around on the net, some people get painful hiccups for hours :eek:0 -
my OH had hiccups continuously for 4 weeks once- just before he had to meet my parents.
he also hiccuped all the way through our wedding.
so i'm guessing his was stress related (or something to do with subliminal feelings about commitment)
he went to the emergency room in hospital (in the USA) but they just charged him $80 and had a good laugh at his expense.
i'm sure there was a girl on gmtv (she appeared twice because having been cured they returned) who had 'intractable' ones.
here is the website i read on it- it does have some suggestions at the end if you can get through the other medical bits.

Well Miroslav how's the research going (hopefully youv'e not needed to try any out). I remembered yesterday (too late I'd already done it) that every SINGLE time I eat a bit of raw carrot I get hiccups
absolutely no idea why.
