Car hire insurance USA

Can anyone help, we hired a car from Tampa airport through Avis, and since found out we have no excess cover, we only have 12 days left and they are really expensive! can anyone recommend an insurance company that will cover us part way through the rental period?

We never ever bothered with excess insurance in our eight years of driving in Tampa.

Now that DS has moved to the cold north, the roads are badly pot-holed, so we have taken excess insurance.

  • Thank you for your replies, sorry NiftyDigits I can't get the links to work, the insureyoucarhire.com sites I have tried will not cover me if I already have the car?

The cheapest is here from £2.90 per day. But it appears to be missing SLI. I'd call to confirm before purchase.

Alternatively, look here or here. £5.99 per day.

Personally, I would go with the third option. The first, seems seriously lacking and the second too, though less so.

If you do have any problems, get as much documentation as you can before you leave the country, to prevent problems with your claim.

Probably because the link will appear as a pop up on MSE. Right click, copy and paste. You can buy the insurance anytime before the date of pick-up.
Just read that you already have the car. :o

    Be careful out there.
  • Thank you both, Avis wanted to charge us $1000 to have this cover 100% more than the car hire charge so I thought I could sort it elsewhere learnt a valuable lesson, must take it out before I pick the car up, complete rip off! If anyone knows an insurance company that would cover us for the rest of the rental that would be great.

Are you sure there is an excess on the insurance?

I've never seen an excess on a US rental with numerous rentals with different companies. Of course, the UK brokers still try to sell the excess insurance.

No much chance.. The reason being is that you might have already damaged the car. You could then buy the insurance and then report the damage as fresh.
