How do you put a claim in for ESA?

Hi, can anyone help, asking on behalf of someone else. They are currently off work and have been for a couple of months due to a viral heart infection leading to heart failure. The employer was still paying them full pay but that is about to run out and it looks like they might finish him on ill health grounds. I've had a look and the only thing I think he can claim is ESA for a year, but how does he go about putting a claim in, does he have to wait till work finishes him or not, or can he send for the forms now?

I suspect he will have to wait till work stop paying him then contact JC+ to make a claim for esa which will have to be backed up by sick note0

It does exactly what it says on the tin.
You can't receive ESA at the same time as receiving Statutory Sick Pay, but can put an advance claim in up to 5 weeks ahead of the date you wish to claim from.
The claim is generally taken over the phone these days as this is the quickest way to get a claim moving. The alternative is to request a claim form (ESA1), but this is sent out 2nd class and the reply envelope is also 2nd class.0 -

After i had a Atos medical i was told i'd have to start to claim Jsa, but i went to the local Welfare Rights centre and they helped me with an appeal to go onto Esa, it's still going through yet so no decision.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

He needs to ask his employer for an SSP1
Ask his doctor for a sicknote from the date the SSP ends on the SSP1
He can start claiming ESA from the date the SSP ends on the SSP1 irrespective that he is still being paid by his employer after this date.

Correct, but if he doesn't have an entitlement to Contribution Based benefit and pay from his employer will be taken into account. Irrespective of that, there is no reason not to put in a claim.0
